Let it grow! (on green roofs and their owners)

Pozor! Angol szöveg!
Ez a bejegyzést a World Design Capital 2012 Helsinki blogjára írtam 2012. szeptember 25.-én.

Let it grow!
Once an atheist writer was asked what he missed the most from his hometown? “Honestly? I’d like to hear the bells of our church, one more time!” so he said for great astonishment.
That story in the beginning was a total lie. I made it up. I only wanted to describe my personal experience how culture leaves a mark in human soul, regardless to what we know or believe. You will have a sense that this has little to do with anything that comes later, and you’ll be probably right.
There is one thing I strongly believe: in a city no un-used or irrelevant object can survive a longer period. A building must be useful or bear artistic and/or historical values or be useful anyhow. If it fails to possess any of those features, it will be inevitably  destroyed and give way to a new important and useful building. A city has a limited space to build, and development takes its toll from the green areas more often than not. Interestingly, everybody wants to live close to any green areas, so the city must provide new green spaces to improve life qualities of the citizens. Take this: Establishing a flowery meadow to the densest urban area, without the slightest interference in anyone’s life? Now, that would be genius – And that is a green roof!
(We should not forget, that a green roof will never completely replace any of those habitats destroyed by urban development!)
Did you know how green roofs provide services (to You, too!) by noise attenuation, storm-water retention and so many other ways? No? No worries. It is enough that they are nice, so people easily accept them in their neighborhood. Green roofs are common elements of the urban landscape and a subject to human beliefs as well.

We, I reckon along with you Kind Reader, believe that green roofs are good. In fact, our belief is so strong that it is almost knowledge. We can tell it by the eye. Visual perception of green roofs is generally positive, so, for some reasons, noone really needs scientific literature to confirm it. So, let’s get one of those good roofs, and see what happens?
Shades of green
Really, what happens? It is a living system, so do not expect it to stay there without any change. I’d say the daily, seasonal and annual change of green roof biota (everything living) is one of the most interesting feature in this issue. For a rather sensitive owner, however, this may be a true nightmare. Some plants disappear, some other plants come by the wind.

After six years the planted vegetation and elaborate design is hardly visible. (Central Library, Minneapolis)

The native prairie plant outcompetes the planted sedum on the irrigated roof. (Central Libary, Minneapolis)
Wild flowers, mosses and even trees start to grow on the new roof. Moreover, these newcomers spread all over, and after a few years there are only traces from the original (planted) vegetation. If mosses take over, then that is a serious message everyone should listen to: the roof is probably shaded from the Sun, it is too wet, but the soil is too shallow. This combination of relative darkness, high humidity and thin soil offers perfect habitat for mosses, instead of the planted Sedums and other rocky meadow plants highly adopted to dry and sunny habitats. Yep, nature rules. And moss mats do look pretty nice, though.
Relating quote: “Here in Mojave desert animals had millions of years to adapt to the harsh environment. But the lizard – he’s goig to die.” (Rango, 2011)
Sisyphus on the roof
Because we all love quotes from old Greeks, let’s see this one from Diogenes Laertius: “There is nothing permanent except change.”
Here we go again. What happens if a given roof owner thinks that the newly built, rather pricey green roof is just another product, like a doorknob? In some cases in both Europe and the United States the owners demand regular maintanence from the builder to keep plant species number(species diversity) where they started in the beginning. Especially when the owner explicitly orders to exclude yellow plants, as those attract bees (Don’t laugh, it has happened in Denmark). Make no mistake, the owner has all the right to do whatever (s)he likes and can on the roof within the frames of law.
Still, the practice of manually steering the biota on a green roof seems to be extremely sillyexpensive and time consuming, and all in all, hardly sustainable.
But wait a minute! Would such green roof owners change their way of thinking if somebody told them a story on conservation values, ecosystem functioning and the likes? There is a research on this topic within our group, I can’t wait to hear their results.
What I mean is for instance, telling the owners that their brand new roof has all the potential to host some local plants and animals suffering from habitat loss? Would they refuse to keep the newcomer plants afterwards?
Yes, conservation can be VERY local, you don’t always have to seek distant lands to save something. Simply put, let nature follow its course and interfere only when necessary. Tree seedlings can harm the roof with their roots, so no question why trees must go. On the other hand, the immigrating herbs and mosses will be quite a look at!

There are currently several experiments on native plants. The researchers try to find the secrets of the successful establishment of a number of native plant species under various roof conditions. Visible hints of the research can be found on roofs of Helsinki University buildings Exactum and Fabianikatu 26, but the enormous green-red experimental roof at Vantaa Porttipuisto will surely stick out from the boring urban setting.
We believe that roofs are good, but we know that we can make them even better.
Do we need a better ending for this post?

You build it...

You build it…

(a cikket a Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 blogjára írtam 2012 augusztus 29.-én)
…and the zoologists will come. As the quote goes ”You build it, and they will come (1)” it’s not difficult to picture the scene of a newly built green roof, where three fully equipped biologists pop up from nowhere, even before the animals could find it.
There is always something moving about finishing a work that kept you busy for a period of time. No doubt, it is even more moving when we translate our work into numbers. Last year we only told a story. Now we provide the research frame and a short list just to sum up the season:
Problem: Surface of urban green roofs increases each year, but our knowledge of their role on local animal diversity is far from satisfactory. Yes, we assume these roofs are “important”, but it’s unclear why, and how important they are in Finland?
Goal: Discovering the current fauna of vegetated roofs of similar age in Helsinki-Vantaa area, reveal conservation values and potential threats (alien/invasive species), as well as the main drivers of invertebrate community compositions.
Methods: Vacuum insect collector (DVac122) and colour pan traps, so we don’t harm the roof material.
Who: Ferenc Vilisics PhD, Kukka Kyrö, PhD student, Henri Järvisalo summer intern, and Susanna Lehvävirta, principal of the “Fifth Dimension” research programme.
When: May-August 2012

Emptying the sample mesh bag of the DVac
The numbers (without mentioning the endless list of meetings, consultations and informal chats):
- Visited 21 roofs in 10 addresses,
- Visited each roof 4 times between May and August.
- Driven cc. 600 km by car, used cc. 42 l of gasoline.
- Spent roughly 20 full days on the roofs, and devoting cc. 380 man-hour for the task.
- Collected cc. 1080 DVac samples, operated DVac for cc. 500 minutes (8h 30mins).
- Used cc. 20 rolls of 3–5L plastic bags and 4 liters of gasoline for DVac-ing.
- The team members have climbed the ladders cc. 130 times altogether.
- Injuries: zero, but ripped one trousers.
The work went as it has been planned without any major events. After a somewhat shaky start on a cold and windy day of May, we could eventually develop our routine enabling us great efficiency and made each move predictable.
“Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”(2). Yes, indeed. The vacuuming is just the beginning of a long bitter-sweet assignment in the lab, selecting all the bugs from 1080 samples. One average sample contains over 100 microscopic mites, springtails and thripses, but samples with 500 specimens aren’t rare either.
Personal notes
I am not a particularly brave person, but for most people – perhaps - a green roof research may relate to courage. I have a good deal of acrophobia (horror of height), plus allergic to bee sting. Courage, however, is not the most important feature one needs in the pursuit of better understanding urban green roof ecology. It’s more like curiosity.
Curiosity overcomes impossible conditions – evidence provided by generations of students and supervisors working in the field and labs 24/7 just to get answer to even the most obvious questions.
When you watch a popular science channel, you may see a random rainforest with a commentary“there are 122 tree species in this mountain forest in Honduras”. We may overlook it, but somebody had to climb up there and count those trees.
In our case, curiosity is required to spend a summer on roofs possessing so obvious handicaps: height, exposure to sun and wind, hard to reach with heavy equipments, not mentioning the various interactions with roof owners and managers who guard the gates of urban green roofs.
We believe it is cool to occupy ourselves with vacuuming bugs on green roofs. So, time to time we will return and give a better insight into our work.

Ember és természet

Örömmel jelenthetem, hogy a jeges-havas hírek elfogytak egy időre: Finnország déli fele végre a tavaszt ünnepli! A harmic fokos hőség ugyan elkerült minket (ácsi, Karélia felé volt 27 fok a múlt héten!), de a tavasz 15 fokban is megmutatja magát. És fény, fény, kikerülhetetlen világosság szinte egész nap!

Ebben a bejegyzésben lesznek olyan részek, amelyeket a kutyások és hazafiak, valamint a kutyás hazafiak igazságtalannak, túlzónak, korlátoltnak vélhetnek. Ez teljesen rendben van.

Élet mindenütt
Pehelyréce (wikipedia.hu)
Tavaly hosszú blogbejegyzésekben lelkendeztem a madarak érkezése fölött. - pehelyrécéket is sikerült megfigyelnünk a sziget nyílt tengerre néző oldalán.

A jó idő a terepi szezon hírnöke is egyben. A holtfás projektet folytatjuk idén is.

A zöldtetős téma népszerűsége szárnyal Finnországban. Egyet mondok: ez a projekt képviseli az egyetemet a World Design Capital 2012 programjaiban. Niina, a kutatás "hivatalos" fotósa, aki tavaly (egy filmessel kiegészülve) egész nyáron követte és dokumentálta a biológusok munkáját, heti rendszerességgel kapta a megrendeléseket mindenféle újságoktól. Ez a hullám most csillapodni látszik.

Tegnap a viharos szélben főpróbát tartottunk. Az eltervezett 18 tetőből nyolcat sikerült felkeresni, kijelölni a random mintavételi pontokat és hat tetőn gyűjteni is sikerült. A kezdeti bizonytalanságot követően jó volt látni, ahogy olajozottá vált a munka, és a létra sem szegte kedvünket. A 6-8 kilós D-Vac feljuttatása a tetőre megérne egy külön misét.

Hétfőn folytatjuk, jó idő lesz és meglátjuk meddig jutunk!

Méhek a városban.

Méhészet a városban? Őrület, de van benne rendszer! A városok tele vannak virággal, a parkok, kertek, erkélyek egész szezonon keresztül, folyamatosan nektárt és pollent biztosítanak a rovaroknak. Ezzel szemben a város melletti végtelen repcetábla két hétig virágzik, aztán vége, nem is beszélve a vegyszerekről, amelyektől a városi növények jobbára mentesek.

Igaz is: ahol a méhek nagyobb tömegben virágot találnak, ott amúgyis alacsonyabb a forgalom. A mézen nem jelentkezik határérték feletti szennyeződés. (Hivatkozásokat fogok keresni, most nincs rá időm. Mindjárt felébred a család). A méhkaptárak jelenléte oktatási célra is kiváló.

A Melliferopolis keddi szemináriumán előadást tartottam a városi élőhelyekről a pollinátorok szemüvegén át.

Én azonban a földi források fölösleges pocsékolását látom ebben a hóbortban.

A városi kutyák térnyerése előtt, főleg egyedülálló, fiatal nők esetében, értetlenül állok.

Záró gondolatok
Jobbra tekintek a számítógéptől. A nappali üvegén keresztül Viikki zöld legelőit látom barna tehenekkel, azokon túl pedig erdőt. A nyílt terepen viharsirályok százai fehérlenek.
